Bougainville Portraits
Facing the Place
10 April - 11 May
Despite surviving thirteen years of unspeakably violent war, the island of Bougainville, in the southeast of Papua New Guinea, has been largely ignored by international media. Australian photographer Jon Lewis visited Bougainville in 2002 and 2003, not long before its first ever autonomous elections.
Lewis travelled widely in Bougainville, by boat, truck and sometimes helicopter, meeting people, hearing stories and photographing intensely. These striking images of the many people he connected with reflect the diversity and courage of this small island after a decades-long secessionist battle, a bitter civil war and a complex peace and reconciliation process.
