TECHNOLOGY MEETS ART IN NEW EXHIBITION
Art and design in this technological age are examined in an exhibition of new work, entitled Techné, which opens at UTS Gallery on July 11.
Techné features the work of 12 teaching staff from the University of Technology, Sydney's Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building.
The artists use new and time-honoured technologies including typography, textiles, print making, photography, installation and digital media. One of the works is a short film, "The Clerk" which will be screened a number of times during the exhibition.
"The aim of Techné was to gauge current responses to technology and to see what possibilities would arise when more traditional skills and newer technologies collided. The theme offered a medium to explore and a subject to critique." said Acting Curator of UTS Gallery, Felicity Sheehan.
Although the scope of work included is broad, a few common themes are apparent. "A number of artists stress the importance of process, while others refer to the idea that the medium is the message. The disparity between the natural world and the built environment is also a recurring concern." she said.
The 12 artists represented in Techne are Winston Barnett, Adrian Boddy, Jacqueline Gothe, Michael Hill, Tom Loveday, John Mavety, Sue Pedley, Julia Raath, Darrall Thompson, Mark Titmarsh, Peter van Sommers and Jenny Wilson.
Techné opens Tuesday 11 July and runs until 28 July. The exhibition will be officially opened on 18 July by Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Elizabeth Ann Macgregor.
Free artists talks will be held in the Gallery on Thursday July 20 and Tuesday July 25 at 6pm. Contact the Gallery for details on free screenings of"The Clerk". Gallery hours are Tuesday - Friday, 12 - 6pm and entry is free.
