Pierced Sky
by Milena JNK
17 Oct - 10 Nov
The exhibition presents some twenty works created by a renowned Yugoslav visual artist Milena JNK in Belgrade at the time of the bombing of Yugoslavia, April 1999.
The exhibition is, on one hand, the artist's diary-like documentation of her own and collective emotions, on the other hand, it is a prayer for peace. Having suffered not only the atrocities of the war but also the emotions of the innocent awaiting a fatal strike, Milena JNK poured more than these emotions into her work.
There is no contradiction in her artistic statement, although 'lyrical and poetic' are the qualities of her works that she aptly entitles 'Butchered sky' or 'Lacerated sky'. Serene in style, cris-crossing the unstable line between the figurative and the abstract in form, these paintings tell a powerful story of the constant oscillating of the human soul between desolation and hope.
Milena JNK is a renowned Yugoslav visual artist, stage and costume designer and puppeteer. Over the past 20 years, she has had 36 solo exhibitions in Yugoslavia and internationally, and participated in numerous group exhibitions. Her set and costume design credits include over 90 theatre productions.
She was awarded national and international awards, including The Grand Award of Serbia. This Carnivale visual arts exhibition is presented in association with the UTS Gallery.

Milena J. N. K. is a renowned Yugoslav visual artist, stage and costume designer and puppeteer. Her Pierced Sky exhibition is a documentation of the emotions of the innocent awaiting a potentially fatal bombing strike, as well as being a prayer for peace. Her paintings are a subliminal, lyrical, and spiritual response to aggression and violence.
Having almost exclusively expressed herself on large-scale canvasses and through huge installations over the past twenty years, the artist's works in Pierced Sky are a departure from her usual media. The ethereal paintings are created on very light, translucent paper, interfered with in various ways, to represent the vulnerability of the sky to destruction from aerial attack.
"When the sky, the protective celestial membrane, is destroyed, the human condition becomes desperate," explained Milena J. N. K. "Blurring the line between the figurative and the abstract, these paintings tell a powerful story of the constant oscillation of the human soul between desolation and hope."
Over the past 20 years, Milena J. N. K. has had 36 solo exhibitions in Yugoslavia and internationally, and has participated in numerous group exhibitions. She has received numerous awards, including the Grand Award of Serbia, awarded by the Ministry for the Arts in 1992.
